But, CSI: Photo is back to shooting....
Today was team photo day for Pace university. They also had a football clinic. Pretty soon I will be back to shooting on a regular basis for several different colleges in the area. hopefully this year I will get to try many different types of shots and a few different angles.
I will have the remote cameras back in action this year and will continue to strive for those unique images from inside the goals....

Different point of view

I saw the type of image on a photography forum I regularly browse and decided to see if I could duplicate it. For this image I pre-focused my camera about 10 feet in front of the plate and waited for the ball to be released. It took a few tries to get it down. But, I think it does have a very different look to it. It is pretty much just a matter of timing, as in any form of sports photography. It's all about timing.

Always looking for a different point of view....

I had the opportunity to have my Pocket Wizards modified today. I did this through Michael Bass Designs. I don't live too far from Michael and meet with him today. I had called him earlier in the week to discuss my needs. Michael was very helpful in providing my with the best solution to my needs. He works very closely with the people at LPA, (the manufactures of PW's).

As many of you know I do a lot of remote photography in my sports shooting. Some of which require me to house the camera for safety the my equipment as well as the players. With the camera and PW located in a housing this cut down on the reception of the receiving PW, causing missed shots. After seeing Michael's web page for some time now. I decided to see if modifying my PW's would help.

I meet Michael at his house and we discussed my needs a little further. And we decided that the antenna modification should help me. Michael also is ordering me a special antenna (which we tested at his house) that is set for the PW's frequency. This will enable me to have a set-up which is customizable to my needs.

If anyone is looking for that little something that is a little out of the ordinary, that little thing that you always say, "Where can I get something that can do this". I suggest you wonder over and check out Michael's web page.

Rainy weather stirs up the scheduling

Baseball season is in full swing for CSI: Photo. Along with all the other spring sports.
Today I needed to switch scheduling for a baseball game that was scheduled for Saturday. But, with the weather not looking to good for Saturday Pace University switched it's planned double header to Friday Afternoon. Along with the switch it was also moved to New Haven University. So, I packed up the car and headed out to NHU for some baseball.

Funny thing is I already had 1 softball game postponed due to rain and I will again be heading out to New Haven next week end for the make-up.

The spring schedule goes by really fast due to the majority of the games on March being played down south. So all my scheduling needs to by done in pretty much a five week span. The schools I shoot for have been really flexible as to when I can make these games up. Also, I have been following the weather and anticipating any inclement weather and moving games around to make sure I can get them all in.

So far the weather looks pretty good for the up-coming week. Which again will be a busy one. I have 2 softball game and a women's lacrosse game. The women's lacrosse game will be for Dominican College, in Rockland County. It will be my first time shooting for this school. I was referred to them by one of the school I currently shoot for. I'm glad my clients have been happy with my work enough to refer my business.

Well I will try to up-date this blog sometime soon. I am pretty quite with the updates during the summers months. About the only shooting I get out to do it some stuff for my art portfolio. Although I have been getting quite a few calls regarding weddings and receptions for the summer months.

NCAA Tounaments continue

CSI: Photo continues it's weekend trips to the NCAA tournaments. This weekend I will be shooting the Regional NCAA Hockey tournament in Bridgeport, CT.

I have been contracted by the University of Michigan for this Round of the Tournament.

I am still waiting for the NIT regional round to complete. To see if another trip to the Garden will be made this year.

Another NCAA Tournament passes into the night

Last night was the Division 2 NCAA Eastern Regional Finals between nationally ranked #2 C. W. Post and #24 Bentley University. I shot for both Stonehill College and Bentley on Saturday. For the finals I shot for Bentley again.

This was a very exciting game from the get go. Bentley quickly mounted the charge and held as much as an 18 point lead. Going in to the half Bentley was well in command of the game.

The second half proved to be another story, as C. W. Post took command of the game. The Pioneers held off a late charge by the Falcons to advance to the D2 NCAA's ELITE8 to be held in Springfield MA next week.

High flying action in the NCAA Division 2 Regionals

I shot 3 game today all were very exciting. This was the first time I shot at C.W. Post campus on Long Island. It was a fairly dark gym. But, I was able to get some pretty good results with some post processing in LightRoom.

I was contacted by Bentley and Stonehill colleges, both in Massachusetts. And Both are in the NorthEast-10 Conference in Division 2. C.W. Post was playing the game in between the 2 schools. So, for show some examples for my work to C. W. Post I shot that game as well. They are also, the #2 rated school in D2 Basketball. So why not LOL.

Hopefully, Bentley College will make it to the finals on Tuesday cause they have already requested I shoot for them if they make it that far. GO! BENTLEY!!

But, if all else fails I am all geared up to finally start shooting outside. I have already started with LAX and Softball. Baseball is just around the corner.

Hockey season finally

Well it's been a long season for me with hockey. When the season began I started off with my new in-goal camera housing. I was able to get some fantastic shots with the camera set up in the goal. It was certainly put through all the tests that hockey could have put it through. It survived 3 man pile ups in the goal, goalies flat on their back on top of it, to many other forms of abuse one might not thing a camera should be subject to.

Last week I set up the same set up in lacrosse and it did not last through the first half of the game. In my trek to the glass shop to pick up some more lexan, The shop owner said I had not made some of the bends in the lexan correctly. He explained the correct way to form it to what I needed properly. I will be coming out with a new housing soon to continue with some more of the shots I have been getting known for in and around the goals.

YES Network to Air Images

I got an e-mail yesterday from the YES Network (Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network) regarding some images I took for the Long Island Sled Hockey team. The YES Network will be doing a piece on the hockey team which will air on February 9th. Basically, the Long Island Sled Hockey team is for individuals from 7 to 21+ years of age with physical and/or mental handicaps. The Local WABC in New York will also be doing a piece on the team featuring images from their visit to West Point.

The team is known as the RoughRiders and have been playing for 14+ years and has been incorporated since 2003. I had the opportunity to photograph them both this year, and as well as, last year during the teams visit to West Point.

Long Island Sled Hockey, Inc. is an organization made up of 45 physically and/or mentally handicapped athletes between the ages of 7 and 21+ who participate in a wonderful sport called sled hockey. This sport is described on our Home page. We have been competing for 14 years and were incorporated as Long Island Sled Hockey, Inc. on December 29th of 2003. Our team name "RoughRiders" was chosen in honor of President Teddy Roosevelt.

This amazing group of young boys and girls has captured the hearts of everyone with whom they've come in contact. Their accomplishments are many and are listed in our Scrapbook section. We are the only program of its kind in the United States as we enjoin both physically and mentally challenged athletes on the ice. Our athletes are afflicted with such disabilities as autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, dystonia, mental retardation, spina bifida and the like. Their success we measure in smiles not medals, in pride not ribbons, in determination and courage, not wins and losses.

Unfortunately, we are also the only program of its kind without a corporate sponsor to help defray our expenses. With sleds averaging $800-$1200 each, uniforms and protective equipment costing upwards of $2000 per athlete, ice rental currently at $635 per 90 minute session, and the ever-increasing insurance, travel and tournament fees, our yearly budget stands at nearly $220,000. ALL monies raised during the year (see Home page) go directly to our athletes. There are no administrative fees or coaches salaries paid. LensBaby and basketball

I had the chance to play around with my LensBaby Composer during some basketball tonight. I had tried this once before. And came out with some pretty good results. So, tonight I did some more images with it and played around a little more looking for particular shots. This image was the one I was looking for.
I never really take out the LensBaby for sports shooting. But after looking for something different I decided to play. I think I might just have to keep the Composer on one of my cameras for sports from now on. Using the newer version of the LensBaby makes it much easier to compose a picture for some anticipated action around the net (or other key areas of play). Look forward to seeing more with the LensBaby and my sports photography.

How-To instructions on a camera floor plate

I think the Overexposed floor plates are a really well made product. And I have almost pulled the trigger on buying it a few times. Than I started thinking what can I use to make a home made version that would suit my needs.

This is what I came up with.

My "how to" floor plate I use for basketball. The first thing I will list all the pieces and parts you will need to make your own floor plate camera support. The size of my plate is only the size I chose to make mine. You may make it any size to suit your particular needs. Mine I choose to make it 7" x 11" this gave my a 6" spread in between cameras. So, it would not be over crowded with the pocket wizards. Now on to the list.

1) piece of 3/4 inch thick wood. I used 3/4" plywood and cut it to 7" x 11"

4) 1/4" fender washers. Can be found at Home Depot, Lowe's or your local hardware store. Pennies each, maybe .20¢ for all 4

Hex bolts - 1/4-20 for most ball heads - For Bogen/Manfrotto heads you will need 3/8-16 bolts. About a quarter a piece.

2) 3/4" for the hot shoe plates.
1) 2 1/2" for the shorter riser.
1) 6" for the longer riser.

If you want different size risers you will need a hex bolt 1" longer than the riser height.

For the risers I used 3/4" gas piping referred to as nipples. Also available at the same locations as the above items.

The shorter riser is a 1 1/2" nipple, also called a shoulder nipple. Maybe 2 bucks each

The higher riser is a 5" nipple. I chose the 5" because with the hex bolts most retail stores stock only up to a 6" bolt. And remember the hex bolt needs to be 1" longer than the riser. Around $3+ each.

To hold the nipples in place and stabilize them I used flanges. You will need 2) 3/4" flanges. Found right next to the black pipe at the hardware stores. About 4 bucks a piece

For the ball heads I used Sunpak compact ball heads available @ B&H for $19.95 each I just had these laying around. So, that is what I used. These are rated for 4.2 pounds. I have not had any problems mounting a Canon xti with a 85 1.8 lens on them. Longer glass you might want to think about a different head. But. The great thing about these heads is, the head will recess in to the black pipe nipples and hold them in place nicely.

To mount the Pocket Wizard I used these adapters also from B&H for $6.95 each. I had 2 kickin' around.

These are called Nikon flash adapters. I use them in the Pocket Wizard's tripod socket to mount in the on to the plate so in case of any stay balls, players ect. the plastic foot on the PW's does not break. B&H also for $6.95 each. A small price to pay for the safety of the PW's. You'll need a set for each wizard if you choose to use them.

After I have the wood cut to size and drilled I used a black vinyl with a sticky back to cover up the top. This makes it have a nice finished look. I got this at Micheal's Craft Store for about 10 bucks. Also at Micheal's I got a 9" x 12" adhesive backed "Fun Foam" to place on the bottom to protect the basketball floors. This is .99¢

Here you can see I marked the wood in the center, both vertically and horizontally. For the holes I drilled using a 1 3/8" wood bit. And only drilled to a depth of 3/8". This is enough to insure the hex heads are recessed into the plate. To finish the holes I used a 1/4" bit and drilled the rest of the way through.

Here you can see how the hex heads and fender bolts are recessed in to the bottom of the wood.

For the risers I drilled 2 1/2" from the left and right sides. For the hot shoe mounts I drilled 1 1/2" from the top and bottom. Remember not to drill all the way through with the 1 3/8" bit only to a depth of 3/8". So, you'll have a nice 5/8" base.

As you can see I already installed the shoe mounts and the short riser. The white tubing I have covering the gas pipe is called pex tubing. It is not available in small quantities so I did not list it. But, if you have access to it, it is 1" aqua pex. I just think it adds a little finished look. Excuse the gaffers tape. This was already in use and I took it apart for example.

This is just to illustrate how you will be centering the flange with the 5" nipple after you screw the nipple in to the flange. Screw the nipple all the way in to the flange. Use a couple of pipe wrenches.

Now that you have tightened the nipple in to the flange you will have the bolt sticking out the top of the pipe slightly. Go ahead and screw the ball head on to the bolt. Tighten with a ratchet wrench.

Here is the completed floor plate. I wrapped a bit of gaffers tape to the taller riser so it is handy when needed.

I got some contact information through a local reporter covering the Army/Navy basketball games for a paper in Maryland. After a series of e-mails they will be using several of my images in the Capital Gazette. It will not be the first time I have had images in the newspapers. But, anytime you can get you name out there in the papers being a new business is a good thing.

For tomorrows game I will be mounting a camera above the shot clock again for a unique view of the game. Hopefully images like the ones I get through my remote cameras will begin to make a name for me. If time allots I will be getting some images of my set-up and posting them here to share.

Goal-Cam got wrecked tonight

But, not before capturing this image.
I had to pull the camera out of the net and make some quick repairs to the housing in time to get it back into the net for the 3rd period. I scurried around to get some duct tape (man I love that stuff) With in a few minutes I had the housing all taped up and ready to go for round three. I really didn't have the time I needed to make all the adjustments to the camera and make sure the angle was good. But, I did come up with some good pictures in the third period. So it was worth the effort. The housing has taken quite the beating the year. But has stood up remarkably well.

Making the best of a remote camera set-up

I think the best way to make use of a remote camera set-up is to make some sort of composite image combining 2 of the images captured at the same time from 2 separate angles. This images 1 was captured from a remote camera mounted above the shot clock. The inset image was captured with a camera I was hand-holding and triggering the remote camera via Pocket Wizards.

The one thing to remember most importantly when using remote camera all precautions should be taken to insure to prevent cameras from falling. Please remember to use safety cables on all equipment mounted above playing surfaces or other areas. Not only will this safeguard your equipment. But, if any mountings or supports should fail safety cables will prevent equipment from falling on to spectators or players.

Goal-Cam is really starting to shine

This image was taken with my goal-cam. Owen Meyer of Army gets one in between the legs of Mercyhurst's Ryan Zapolski to score what turned out to be the game winning goal.

This is the view from my vantage point. Luckily, I have the cameras time synced up pretty close so I am able to match images from several different cameras fairly easily.

Good use of remote camera

This is a set of images I was able to capture using a hand-held camera, as well as, a remote camera. For this I was shooting with a wide angle lens setup on my remote camera. The camera was placed on a tabletop tripod placed next to me on the floor. For the inset shot I was shooting with my 70/200 f/2.8. Again this is just 1 more option for shooting with remote cameras.

Strobed Remote Camera

Today I had the chance to do something I normally would not do. I strobed my remote camera.

Normally, I would be shooting with one camera and triggering the remote camera and strobes via a Pocket Wizard mounted on my hand-held camera. With this set-up the remote camera fires 1/2000th of a second after the strobes so, this requires me to set the remote camera manually to available light. But, today I did not shoot with my hand-held camera so, I was able to try shooting in relay mode with the Pocket Wizards. To do this a total of 3 remotes are needed. (In my case 6 because 4 are attached to strobes). What i did was the strobes are set to channel 1 (they are mounted in the ceiling so are not able to be changed.) And the PW mounted to the remote camera was attached to the hot shoe and a cable attached to the camera's remote was set to channel 4. The PW used to fire the remote camera was also set to channel 4.

In relay mode the remote camera fires ~1/2000th of a second later and the PW attached to the camera's hotshoe will than relay a signal via the next higher channel (channel 1 in this case). Now the remote camera and strobes will fire simultaneously to capture a strobed image.

To strobe both the hand-held camera and the remote camera this would require a total of 8 strobes and 10 Pocket Wizards. But, the remote camera would still be firing ~1/2000 of second later but, now all the images would be strobed.

Semi-Pro Hockey

Tonight at the Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, CT the Aces (13-2-1-0) defeated the Danbury Mad Hatters (6-6-0-1) 4-2. The Aces were outshot for just the second time this season, but remained undefeated in that situation. Danbury struck first in this hard-fought battle, when Mike O'Sullivan found Igor Karlov in front of the net for his 7th goal of the season, less than two minutes into the first. Jesse Felten evened the score at 1-1 with his 5th of the season, late in the first, and the Aces never looked back.

Chris Holmes scored for the 9th time this year on an assist from Mike Christensen midway through the second period. Later in the period Christensen struck again, leading James Brannigan to his 20th goal of the year, giving Brooklyn the 3-1 advantage. Christensen had an assist on all four Brooklyn goals in the game. Goalie Eddie Neville remained hot, stopping 35-of-37 Danbury shots on goal, improving his league leading save percentage. A late goal by Danbury's Dan Hickman would not be enough, and Brooklyn held on for the 4-2 win.

Shooting high - Looking down

Today my goal was to mount my remote camera above the 35 second clock. I was running late due to this mornings weather. (It's been snowing most of the week-end here) When I need to set up my camera anywhere above the rim I need to get to the arena at least 2 hours prior to tip-off. Well I got there only 1 hour prior to the beginning of the game. So, I needed to set up my camera and make all my adjustments on a different backboard.

Being this was the first time I was setting up the remote above the shot clock I needed some extra time to make sure everything was properly set and all adjustments were made correctly. After having the remote all set I checked with the refs and the opposing teams head coach to see if there were any final objections. Everything was good to go.

VMI informed me that their team would be heading back into the locker room 35 minutes prior to tip-off for approximately 10 minutes. This would give me plenty of time to drop the net set-up the ladder and secure the camera, and make any final adjustments needed.

With the remote set to a limited field of view I don't expect many shots. But, the shots I do expect to get should be outstanding. I was not proved wrong for today's game.

In all I got 9 images with the remote camera. As I mentioned to Army's SID, I would be happy with 5-10 shots from this view. The camera was mounted with a 15mm lens. Which covers the entire 3 point area. I think my setup for next time might call for a 20mm lens. This way I would not need to crop the images as much.

In all I am quite happy with the results I have been getting from all the different angles I have been able to get using the remote set-up.

Holiday Lights Shooting

I've been doing some driving around to try and find some holiday light to get the LensBaby another go around. I hope it is not the case all over the country but there does not seem to be to many holiday lights up this year.

I drove through this one town near me knowing that they tend to have some nice lights up. I found a few. and Main Street was decorated quite nicely. But, again not to many lights in and around town.

But anyways, This shot was taken with my new LensBaby Composer with the ZonePlate optic. I think it gives off a sort of mystic look to it. Hopefully before the holidays come and go I will be able to find some real nice lights to share.

First time shooting @ MSG

Finally had the chance to shoot at Madison Square Garden. That's right I made it to MSG!!!

Three years ago West Point started a tournament to honor Maggie Dixon. In 2005, just 11 days before the 2005-2006 season, Dixon was hired as the women's basketball coach of the United States Military Academy. In her first year, they surprised the college basketball world by going 20-11 and winning the Patriot League conference tournament; she took them to 2006 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament as a 15 seed, where they lost to the University of Tennessee, 102-54. It was the first March Madness tournament appearance for any Army basketball team.

Her brother was Jamie Dixon, the head men's basketball coach of the University of Pittsburgh. In 2006, the Dixons became the first brother-sister pair to take teams to the NCAA basketball tournaments the same year, as Jamie's Pittsburgh Panthers also made the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Her brother lost in the second round to Bradley.

Just weeks after her appearance in the tournament, on April 5, 2006, Dixon was hospitalized at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, after collapsing and suffering what her brother described as an "arrhythmic episode to her heart." Dixon died the next night at the age of only 28, a little over a month shy of her 29th birthday. An autopsy revealed that Dixon had an enlarged heart and had a problem with a heart valve.

Dixon was buried at the West Point Cemetery, an honor usually reserved only for high ranking officials.

On November 12, 2006 West Point held the 1st Annual Maggie Dixon Classic, a basketball mini-tournament in Dixon's honor. It featured two games, a men's and women's game. In the men's game Jamie Dixon's Pitt Panthers defeated Western Michigan and in the women's game the Army women's team lost to Ohio State. The games were televised by ESPNU.

In the 2007-2008 season the Classic moved to Madison Square Garden and featured the University of Pittsburgh women's team against Duke University and Army and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Another college added to our local line-up

CSI: Photo would like to welcome Mercy College to it's line-up of local colleges. Since the conception of CSI: Photo we are pleased to have shot for over 15 colleges competing at all levels of NCAA competition.

CSI: Photo has shot events which include the 2007 & 2008 Army/Navy football game, 2008 NCAA Regional Hockey Tournament, 2008 Patriot League ¼ finals (basketball) and the 2008 NE-10 Conference Volleyball Championships.

As CSI: Photo continues to expand it presents in the Hudson Valley, as well as, Northern New Jersey and Southwestern Connecticut we strive to be committed to cutting edge sports photography.

Photographing the Army/Navy Game

It was my second time being on the field for the Army/Navy game. As one would expect this is a pretty fun time. It is also a pretty crazy event to be shooting.

The weather forecast for Saturday initially called for snow. But closer to Saturday it changed. It turned out to be a pretty nice day. Didn't get above 40 but at least it didn't snow.

My day started out at 6:30 waking up at a friends house I stayed at in southern Jersey. They only live about 30 minutes outside of Philly. It was good to get to see them. I have not seen them in quite some time. We had a nice dinner on Friday night and a few cocktails and did some catching up.

7:30 I hit the road. My first stop was to the Alumni breakfast for some pictures. and a little breakfast. You can't go to a Army/Navy game with-out experiencing all that goes on there. The sprint band played and the cheerleaders came out to get everyone riled up for the game.

Kick off was at 12 o'clock so at 10:30 I was headed for the stadium. I knew the security was going to be a little tighter than normal due to the fact President Bush would be attending the game. He came on to the field and walked around the field shaking hands as he went. It was a media frenzy LOL.

I pretty much knew that Army would have a tough time with Navy this year after being on the field for many of their games this year.
After awhile and not to many chances to get "good" pictures of Army I decided to take some images of the fans and other things going on around the stadium.

I was planning on staying in Philly through Sunday but after dinner It started to snow and was suppose to snow most of the night. So I hit the road and headed for home. It snowed all the way home. I was shot after what turned out to be a four hour drive in the snow. But after it was all said and done it was a good weekend. I was able to get a few shots in and around Pilly for my artsy portfolio, see some friends and and shoot my last football game of the season.

Now it's time to focus fully on Basketball and Hockey. Next Sunday I will be shooting at Madison Square Garden for the Maggie Dixon Classic. It will be my first time shooting at the garden. I will be shooting the first game for Army. Then be watching UCONN vs. Penn State. That should be a great game to watch.

Drive on a country road

I took a drive on a country road today in search of some new HDR images. Heading out with only My Canon 20D with my Lensbaby Composer and my tripod. It's nice not lugging around a ton of camera gear for a change. This to me is like hunting to my friends this time of year. But, I don't have to get up at an un-Godly hour and douse myself in animal waste. Instead I grab an beverage of choice (today it was a Pepsi). Jump in my car and wonder around. (Glad the gas prices are still dropping). I headed to Kent Falls in Western Connecticut. Normally this is a summer trip. But, it was a fairly nice day with a good cloud mix for HDR's.

In total I took about 100 images and was able to come up with four really nice HDR's.

This image is 15 images combined in Photomatix. Starting with an exposure of 1/40th of a sec all the way to 1/1000th. After the image was merged in Photomatix, I played a little bit in LightRoom. When I do HDR's this way, I normally view some pre-sets I have and when I find one I like I will start to tweak it till I get it just right (well, at least to my liking).

LensBaby HDR's

I had a few minutes to work on an image I took yesterday. After a few attempts with the new LensBaby Composer I am starting to get a feel for what might make for some good HDR's using the new lens. I have tried some images in the city but, I think with the sence of motion and the blur factor of the LensBaby this might be a little to much to blend in to an HDR. I am really liking this lens for landscape images with the way it softly blurs to the sides. I took this image with the f/4.0 aperture ring. And it really has a nice sweet spot. I also used a 0.6 wide angle adapter for this image. I will be doing some more images very soon.

Tutorial on the Backboard Remote Camera

As promised I am posting how I set-up my backboard camera set-up. This set-up normally takes about 20 minutes to get all set and ready. A few things to look at is 1) how easy do the backboard lower. They can be lowered either electronically or manually. I prefer the manually lowered net. Because they are fast and easy. Sometimes with the electronic ones you might have to wait for someone from facilities to be available and your set-up then becomes up to someone elses time.

Here is all the equipment I use to get the camera hung.
1) Manfrotto Super Clamp.
1) Manfrotto Magic Friction Arm (The friction arm is the better of Manfrotto's two arms)
1) Manfrotto Camera mounting plate
1) Camera (I use the Canon XTi)
1) Fresh Battery in camera
1 Large capacity card (sometimes you just can't get to the camera to change cards.)
2) Pocket Wizards (there are cheaper remotes out there but, the PW's are far more reliable)
2) Camera cable (to connect the camera to the PW's)
Safety Cables (you wouldn't want you equipment to fall on someone!!)
Karabiner clips (good to have a few to assist in attaching your safety cables)

As you can see here I have anything that might cause a distraction to the players covered with gaffers tape. You should always have some gaffers tape handy. Also, prior to mounting you camera you want to pre-focus it just beyond the rim and tape down the lens.
Notice the split rings on the camera. I'll get to those in a minute.

Here I use some black cloth to reduce the reflection off the glass. With out the cloth you will tend to get a reflection of the baseline and anything behind the net in your images.

As you can see in this image the camera is secured to the backboard with the super clamp with the magic arm in between. Notice the safety cable securing all you equipment. I have a cable going through the super clamp and one attached to the camera. Also 1 cable is passing through the lanyard for the Pocket Wizard. To attach the camera to the safety cable I have split rings attached where the camera strap would normally go.

Here is a view from the front with the net lowered. Don't forget before your raise the net you want to make sure you have fresh batteries in everything, format your card, make sure your settings are correct, and most importantly.... Turn everything on. It's a lesson you only learn once.

With any luck you can start getting images that no one else is thinking about.

Backboard camera set-up

Last night I went to set up the backboard camera and was not able to do so. So in order to have the league's permission I must submit some images of the set-up. So tonight I will be shooting another game were I will be setting up the backboard cam. I will be taking some pretty extensive images of my set-up to submit to the league.

I was however able to mount the camera in a pretty good location anyway. This might be a better way to go with the remote camera. I am able to relocate the camera between halves. And I was able to get some good images.

But I will be posting some images of my set-up for those of you that are interested, check back here tomorrow night. I'll have a few images up with some discription of how to go about setting this up.

Batteries not included

It reminds my of the movie from awhile back.

Well I got my camera all set-up and ready to go prior to the women's basketball game today. Normally, I will not set up the remote camera above the rim for the women. But, because of time constraints I needed to have it set up before for today's game.

I arrived in plenty of time to make sure everything was set and ready to go. Proper focus, camera angle, safety cables, and everything was good to go. I fired a few test shots. And downloaded them to the computer and double checked my exposures. All was good.

So I though....

I had a couple of minutes after the women's game. So, I lowered the net and swapped card. In doing this I noticed my pocket wizard was not flashing. The batteries died. I had my transmitting PW in my hand and quickly changed the batteries into the receiver. Turns out I only got off 3 (that's right three) shots. I loaded the card into the computer and noticed there were only 3 images on the card. With a BIG uh oh from me the only SID (he likes to bust my chops) in the room said laughing, "That doesn't sound too good right off the bat."

But, anyway, I didn't expect to get to many shots from the remote cam from the women's game. But, I am REALLY glad I check the camera between games.

Lesson learned. I am going to have to change these batteries a little more often, even if it mean wasting some batteries. (won't really waste them I'll save them for other stuff not so important)

Well I hope every one has a GREAT Turkey Day. I won't be shooting any more sports till after that.

32° at Kick-off

It was a cold one today!!

Well, it didn't look good from the start for the Black Knights. It started off with a fumble recovery run in for a touch down for the Scarlet Knights and they never looked back. Myself and a couple of the other Army photographers were trying to figure out if we were going to get any decent shots other than the defense today.

We are all hoping the the Army/Navy game will not be as cold in 2 weeks. But, I'm kinda thinking with the way the weather has been here it's going to be another cold one. I am planning on spending the week-end in Philly and bumming around on Saturday evening and Sunday Morning taking some photos around the Philly area. I am hoping that my new LensBaby will be here by then. I spoke with someone @ LensBaby and they have sent out a second lens for me to try. I have been expecting their new lens since the PhotoExpo in NYC since speaking with Craig earlier this month.

Well tomorrow is back to the warmer com finds of the basketball arena @ West Point for a double header. I will be setting up my backboard cam tomorrow prior to the start of the womens' game. I don't think I will be using it for the women's game but, I will not be able to set it up between games.

Faces of a Champion

This weekend I photographed the NorthEast-10 Conference Volleyball Championship at Pace University. There was a lot of planing and equipment to be either borrowed or purchased. First off, I needed to secure a second photographer. I did this through some of the photo forums I belong to. Then on to the equipment issues. I didn't have all the lighting I need to strobe a college gymnasium. So, I purchased some new lighting. Because I don't want to have light stands all around the gym with a ton of people and volleyballs all over the place during practice. I needed to purchase some additional clamps and safety cables. Firing the strobes and remote cameras I needed to borrow a total of 5 pocket wizards. After shelling out the bucks for the additional lighting I decided to borrow the wizards. I will be picking up new wizards soon so, all the running around borrowing equipment will come to an end soon.

After all was said and done, I believe all the running around was well worth the effort. I will have additional work coming though the conference and other teams with-in the conference.

So if I can offer any words of advice to my follow photographers. If you think you will need more equipment than you currently own. Do anything to beg, borrow, rent (or steal*) the equipment you need to pull it off with out a hitch.

* On a side note while I don't advise you steal the equipment. I only mentioned it as the saying goes "Beg, borrow or steal." I tossed in rent as the alternative to stealing it...

Swimming & Diving season is upon us

As the winter sports are fast approaching Swimming & Diving is getting under way. As in most indoor sports (even at the D1 level) lighting is always an issue. The best way I have found to overcome lighting conditions at indoor arenas, gym and other venues is to make sure you have some sort of white balance card. I use the WhiBal card. This will insure your shooting is properly balanced and you have correct colors. Many people will just find something white in the shot (ie white shirt, a sneaker, part of a sock ect.)
I used these items in the past with some degree of success. But, one thing your need to remember is how many times do you take something out of the laundry and say to yourself "Man this is dingy?" The WhiBal card is a true neutral, as with many other white balance cards on the market, so you know you your whites will be white.

As far as shooting and noise reduction. I will tend to under expose most of my indoor shooting anywhere between 1.5 and 3 stops. Doing this I am able to keep my shutter speed up over 1/500th of a second. This is essential for any sport at the college level. The younger athletes you can get away with slower shutter speeds. To get a image the is properly exposed I will do some post processing in Adobe Lightroom. This program is very good for batch editing. After I correct the white balance, I apply it to one image and adjust the exposure, noise and other levels to acquire an acceptable image. Then I will batch process all the images with the same adjustments made to the sample image. Some of the images may need further correcting but, 90% of the post processing is complete with batch processing.

Net-Cam Denied

I traveled to Milford, CT to shoot an away game for West Point and had my net-cam almost all set up for their game against Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart plays in a public arena and I had the OK from the rink, Sacred Heart's SID and coach. I, as always, let the officials know it would be in the net. About 5 minutes later the officials called me back and after they talked about it, said I needed to take it out. They had not heard of this being done in this league. The SID for Army got the OK from the league commissioner prior to me setting it up for the season. Long story short the ref's did not like the idea of a camera being in the net with-out written permission from the league.

After some conversation with the 2 schools SID's and the coaches, the ref said I could leave the camera in the goal but, he (the main ref) was not happy about it. So, in doing what I think is the right thing, I pulled the set-up out. Monday I will be seeking written permission from the league offices, being the league has already giving verbal ok. This is just one more step I need to take.

I know I could have left it in the goal but, I know I will be shooting games with these ref's at some other time. So, I don't want them to be on my bad side.

Creating HDR's with the LensBaby

As many of you might already know I love creating HDR (High Dynamic Range) images. During my trip to the Photo Expo in NYC I meet-up with Craig Strong of LensBabies. We got into a conversation about HDR's and the LensBaby. To my surprise there have not been too many HDR submissions to the LensBaby galleries. Turns out the Craig is finds the HDR process very interesting. Craig would like to see some of my HDR images added to the LensBaby galleries. In the very near future I will be receiving the new Composer lens to work some of my HDR magic.

The image here is a HDR image created from 1 image with a +/- 2 stop exposure created with Photomatix and Lightroom. Traditionally, true HDR images are made from multiple images at different exposures. Since I currently have the LB 2.0 (it's held in focus and tilt by hand) it is very difficult, if not impossible to capture multiple images with this lens. As soon as I receive the new lens I will be creating a complete gallery of HDR images to include cityscapes, subway series, and many different subject matters.

I am very excited about this new project. And, hope that you will be checking back to see the progress on this. As soon as I have a gallery with at least 10 or more LB-HDR's I will be adding a featured gallery to my site.

Mpix Boat Tour

Friday I was lucky enough to spent the day with some really great people from Mpix. Mpix sponsored a boat tour on Manhattan. Fellow Mpix users and fellow forum uses spend Friday morning with Rick Sammon and Carey Schumacher touring around Manhattan on a Water Taxi.

We all had the chance to meet with Rick and Carey and to gain knowledge. As well as share techniques and shooting tips. All in all, I know I walked away with a bunch of useful information as well as some new friends.

I look forward to any opportunity I have to do something like this again.

White Balance and shooting sports

After a few inquires on how I get my image results I decided to post a brief summary of my post processing.

I take a test shot of the WhiBal card and it looks like this. I take this image at the iso I am going to be shooting at and set my camera to "P"

For this image the is camera set to AWB and says the temperature is 4800°K. I use the white balance picker in LightRoom and pick anywhere on the card.

This is how the image looks after the WB is set. This is corrected to 3300°K

Then, I set my camera to the readings from the light meter, but I add 2 full stops to obtain 1/500th of a second for my shutter speed. I use the Sekonic L-358, it has a module that will fire the strobes via pocket wizards. It is a very popular meter.

My meter reading for an iso setting of 400 is then taken from out on the ice, and I come up with 1/125th of a second @ f/2.8. from there I shoot 2 stops under exposed and set my camera to 1/500th @ f/2.8

This shot is straight out of the camera.

After setting my WB using the the adjustments from the WhiBal test shot. and adding the ~2 stops back into the image I adjust the image as needed. The full list of adjustment are made in LightRoom and are:

Exposure: +2.25
Recovery: 15
Fill Light: 10
Blacks: 5
Brightness: +80
Contract: +30
Clarity: +14
Vibrance: +10
Saturation: +5
Highlights: -19
Sharpening: 40
Noise Reduction
Luminance: 10
Color: 25

Testing the backboard cam

Well the way I see it is if your gonna do a test session why not test with the pros. This will be my first season using the backboard cam so I took advantage of a NY Knicks practice session held at Pace University in Pleasantville today. As in the past I have tried to get 1 or 2 test prior to the beginning of the season, and basketball is right around the corner.

This is a busy couple of weeks coming up with the winter sports starting, and the fall sports winding down. All in all I got some pretty good results with the backboard cam. I have a few adjustments to make and some parts to order. The parts are due to user error on my part setting up my remote cam in a hockey game last night. I should have the parts replaced in plenty of time to be up and running by the start of bball.

Look for the new basketball and hockey images to be posted with-in 24 hours after the event.

I love shooting from catwalks

I had a request to post a picture from my position up on the catwalk. This is looking down the walk, down the lenght of the catwalk. This is 1 of 5 catwalks in this building, it is all the way at the top of the building. I would say it is around 100 feet up, dead center of the building.

This is one of the shots I got from this location. I liked the lower catwalk I shot from last volleyball game in this building. Although it is considerably tighter, both less head room and narrower. From this location I took up my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I got maybe 5-6 usable images, less than I would have from the lower walk.

Goal-Cam up and running

Well the goal-cam got it's first "GAME" use. It was a scrimmage but, basically game situation. I am please with the results I got today.

I was running late due to a volleyball tournament I was shooting out in Garden City. So, I didn't get there till the 3rd period. I had about 3 minutes to get everything set-up and all my settings. dueing 1 period of play there was 143 shots taken with the camera and I wound up with 27 keepers. I think that is really acceptable results.

The next game is on Saturday were I will be there in plenty of time to set-up everything and hopefully will have even better results.

The one thing that conserns me is the battery and it being mounted only 6 inches above the ice. I might try some pocket hand warmers in the housing.

Football getting bumped

Well I got another call from Stonehill College in Easton, MA today. This call was for Volleyball. Initially I had a hockey scrimmage @ 10 and football @ 1pm @ West Point. I am looking forward to the hockey scrimmage so I can get my in-goal camera some "game" time. prior to the start of the season. Well, wouldn't you know the SID from West Point called today and let me know the scrimmage is @ 5pm.

So, I booked the volleyball for Stonehill College. They have a double header at Adelphia University in Garden City, NY First game is @ 1 against Adelphi and the second is @ 3 against Malloy College... I think I can make it to West Point for at least the second period. This is 1 final test of the in-goal camera housing before the season gets under way. First real game is October 18th.

Ref's, Ump's & Officials

I had a conversation with a football ref today. He asked me if I every take pictures of any of the refs. I said, "not if I can avoid it." LOL

But, anyway, he ask if I could take a few of the crew today. He said that they all have really big ego's (his words not mine) and are always looking to buy photos of themselves. So naturally, I told him I would. After going through some of the images I captured today I decided to add a featured gallery to my site today. A view from the catwalk

I don't think there is any better place to photograph sporting events from other than up on the catwalks. I think it gets you a whole different perspective to the game. I tend to spend quite a bit of time up on those things. But, the shots you can come up with!!

I was suppose to do another volleyball game @ West Point on Saturday. But, I received a call late Friday afternoon, from Stonehill College in Easton, MA. They are playing Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. I photographed a game Stonehill had a few weeks ago versus Pace University. I came up with this image. And a few others. Football action and more

Well another Saturday another football game. Today Pace lost a heart breaker to crosstown rivals Iona College.

What I'm going to try to do here is post some images from the events I shoot and post the technical data. I will post a few action images as well as my favorite sportrait and maybe a fan favorite. As it turns out I've got all 3 today.

This first one I'm always looking for some type of run back on a punt. So, from the sideline I am focused on the punt returner. As he made his way down field I was able to capture this image, with my Canon 20D. My settings for this were iso 200 Av mode with my 70-200 f/2.8 set to 2.8. I needed as much speed as I could get due to the rain and overcast skies.

Here this was an incomplete pass. But, looking for the pass down field I was ready for the play to come my way. Same settings as the previous shot. I don't change my setting unless the sun is setting during the game. Due to the rain the lighting was consistent. (poor but consistent)

On to the "SPORTRAIT" of the day. Here is where I try to capture some of the game emotions in the faces of the players. Settings are very basic 300mm lens and since it's not "L" glass (I'll be there some day Jim) it is shot @ f/5.6 and iso 800.

And last but not least the fan favorite of the day. I spend the down time of the game scouring the stands looking for that group of fans into the game.

Summer long hiatus is over

After taking a break from blogging I will be getting back to this full time.

Here I will be posting some new and interesting shots I will be taking with my new remote camera set-up. I have already photographed many event with the remote set-up. Also, I have been busy testing the housing for an in-goal camera set-up for hockey.

To date I have used the remote camera in both men's and women's soccer. and volleyball. All have proven to be very successful. I have been working with the Army hockey team in testing my in-goal set-up. The first in game set-up will but on October 18th against Merrimack.

Also, I will be posting "SHOTS OF THE WEEK" a selection of images from events shot during the week with a listing of technical information as to how the shot was taken.

Marist Scores Hudson Valley Baseball Classic Victory

Marist scored at least one run in its final six at-bats to take an 11-2 victory over Army in front of a crowd of 2,375 fans at the third annual WPDH Hudson Valley Baseball Classic at Dutchess Stadium Wednesday evening.

FRISBIE'S WALKOFF HOMERUN ENDS FIRST GAME/SETTERS EXPLODE IN GAME TWO

Christina Pane (Stony Point, NY/Cardinal Spellman) broke the school single season record for hits as her second hit in the fourth inning of game two gave her 68 on the season and eclipsed the old record set by Tess Bair with 67 in 2003. In the opener, a pitching dual ended in the ninth inning as Alton Frisbie (Indian Hills, CO/Conifer) saw one pitch in the ninth and blasted it over the fence in left field to give the Setters a 1-0 win, while the Setters exploded for 11 runs in the fourth as they completed the sweep with an 11-1 romp in the nightcap. The Setters end the regular season with a 28-18 overall and 16-12 in the Northeast-10, while Bentley drops to 20-20 and 13-11 in conference play.

BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH UMASS LOWELL

The Pace University baseball team, ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II Baseball Northeast Region Poll, split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts - Lowell today at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville campus of Pace. The River Hawks took the first game 6-2, as the Setters came back in game two with the 5-3 victory to salvage the split. Pace moves to 28-15-1 overall on the season and 17-6-1 in the NE-10, while UMass – Lowell goes to 21-20 on the year and 15-9 in conference play.

BU men's tennis knocks off strong Army squad 4-3

Binghamton University men's tennis (11-9) won four of the six singles matches to pull out a 4-3 win over host Army Wednesday afternoon at West Point. After dropping the doubles point and the top two singles matches, BU rallied for wins at third through sixth singles to snare the win - their fifth in the last seven matches and first-ever over the Black Knights (14-6), who sit atop the Patriot League.

Pace Baseball Defeats Merrimack 4-1

The Pace University baseball team, behind a solid performance from starting pitcher junior Zach Dayton (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth), defeated the Warriors of Merrimack College by the score of 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Finnerty Field. With the win, the Setters improve to 22-12 on the season and 12-3 in the NE-10, while the Warriors fall to 12-17 overall, 9-8 in conference play.

The Purple Eagles Fall to No. 1 Michigan 5-1

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Niagara Purple Eagles (22-11-4) were defeated by overall top-ranked Michigan by a score of 5-1 on Friday, at the Times Union Center in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Regionals.

Niagara came out of the gate with a strong defensive game, allowing no goals during the first stanza and holding Michigan to only four shots during the first 15 minutes of the game. Niagara took three penalty with less than five minutes to go in the period giving the Wolverines a power-play opportunity for most of the remaining period, and picked up an additional seven shots.

Niagara was still down a man to start the second period and Michigan capitalized on the man-advantage with Max Pacioretty scoring the Wolverines first goal off a pass from Chad Kolarik from behind Niagara's goal line.

Kevin Porter, centering Michigan's first line, picked up the following three goals, one in the second period and two more consecutive goals in third period, including one power-play goal.

With less than five minutes to go in the game, Vince Rocco (Woodbridge, Ont.) got the puck behind Michigan's net, and sent a centering pass to Matt Caruana (Orono, Ont.) just above the crease for a wrist shot and a goal on Wolverine Billy Sauer to spoil the shut-out.

Kevin Porter marked one more goal on an empty net to advance the score to 5-1.

"Their defense played well," said Caruana. "We hung with them pretty good but penalties hurt us."

"We just didn't have an answer for their top line," said Dave Burkholder. "They have some special players and we didn't get anything going in our transition game."

Juliano Pagliero (Dalroy, Alb.) kept Niagara in the game stopping 34 shots, 19 in the second period alone.

Purple Nation didn't let Niagara down, as 400 N.U. fans, 100 students and the Niagara pep band supported the Purple Eagles for sixty minutes of hockey. Before departing for the game, Niagara was met by over 100 fans as family, friends, classmates and alumni who held a pep-rally for the boys of Monteagle Ridge.

Niagara ends its season with a 22-11-4 record, the second best record to the 99-00 team who ended with 30 wins on the year.

Mercyhurst Edges Army, Moves To AHA Finals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Mercyhurst scored two goals in each of the first and third periods to beat Army, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament at the Blue Cross Arena.

Mercyhurst, which beat Sacred Heart 4-1 on Friday night, will play in the conference tournament finals against the winner of the Air Force and RIT contest which began at 7:40 p.m. Saturday evening. The winner of that game will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Army ends its season at 19-14-4, winning 19 games for the second consecutive season.

Mercyhurst, the No. 5 seed is now 15-18-7 after scoring all of its goals at the same end of the ice.

Aaron Anderson and Bryce Hollweg scored goals for the Black Knights who ended the season with a 13-2-1 mark in its last 16 games. Will Ryan, Joey Ammon, Cody Omilusik and Luke Flicek all registered assists.

Army goalie Josh Kassel made 23 saves, including 14 in the second period to keep the game tied at 2 after two periods. Mercyhurst won its fourth straight with two goals in the final period.

Four different players scored goals for Mercyhurst, which went 3-0 against Army this season.

In the first Atlantic Hockey Association matchup between these two teams, Mercyhurst led 1-0, 2-1 and then 3-2 before securing its 15th win of the season.

Mercyhurst goalie Matt Lundin made 36 saves, including 28 in the first two periods.

Army had scoring changes early in the game as Cody Omilusik, Joey Ammon, Eric Sefchik, Drew Pierson and Bryce Hollweg all had shots in the first five minutes of the game.

Mercyhurst jumped out to an early lead with a power play score seven and a half minutes into the contest. Matt Pierce tipped in a shot from Matt Fennell to make it 1-0 with 12:31 remaining in the first period.

Anderson tied the game with 5:37 left. After battling for the puck along the boards with Ryan, Army regained possession and knotted the game. Ryan tried to knock the puck off the goalie and Anderson was there to stuff in the rebound. Ammon and Ryan were credited with the assists on Anderson’s second goal of the season. It was Ammon’s first assist of his career and Ryan’s fifth. Ryan ended the season with a three-game scoring streak.

Less than a minute later, during a four-on-four situation, Mercyhurst took its second lead. Mike Gurtler took a long shot from outside the circle. Kassel made the initial save but the puck trickled in with 4:36 left and a 2-1 Mercyhurst lead.

The Black Knights held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal during the first period but still trailed 2-1. Mercyhurst was whistled for two penalties late in the period and Army opened the second period with 5-on-3 advantage for 1:54.

Army didn’t waste the two-player opportunity with Hollweg scoring 1:49 into the second period. Good puck movement and five shots on goal opened the power play, then Hollweg knocked home his 11th goal of the season. Flicek moved the puck to Omilusik who fed Hollweg for the tying goal. It was Hollweg’s third straight game with a goal.

Kassel was stellar in the second period and made sure the game remained tied at two after 40 minutes. Army held a 19-14 advantage in shots during the second period but Kassel seemed to use every bit of equipment to keep Mercyhurst off the scoreboard during the second period.

The Lakers were short-handed to start the third period but Nick Vandenbeld slid a pass to Chris Risi who was in front of the net and scored his 15th goal of the season 25 seconds into the final period to put Mercyhurst on top 3-2.

Mercyhurst took the biggest lead of the game with 14:19 left in the contest. Neil Graham netted his fifth goal of the season, sliding the puck in the back of the net for a 4-2 Mercyhurst lead.

Army kept the pressure on and spent the majority of the third period in the Mercyhurst end of the rink. Owen Meyer, Omilusik, Flicek and Hollweg all had shots on net as did Eric Sefchik and Ken Rowe.

Riley pulled Kassel with two minutes to go during a 4-on-4 situation but the Black Knights could get no closer but took solace in winning the program’s first regular season title.

Boe Barinowski were among the crowd ... Army’s traditional home warm-up CD was played during pre-game warmups ... Aaron Anderson has four career goals in eight games against Mercyhurst. Bryce Hollweg’s score was his first against Mercyhurst in 12 games ... The RIT fans were out in full force for the Army contest. The fans greeted the starters from both teams with the traditional “you suck” but added “sir” at the end of each of the Army starters’ names ... The start of each the second and third period was delayed briefly as the officials waited for the ice to dry from the Zamboni.

Softball Splits Doubleheader With Manhattan College

Patriot League Quarterfinals

American University used a dominating performance on the glass to win its Patriot League quarterfinal against Colgate, 70-46, in women's basketball action on Saturday at Christl Arena. The Eagles out-rebounded the Raiders 38-19 to advance to the conference semifinals Sunday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the Army/Bucknell match-up.

Junior forward Kathy Gruzynski (Elk Grove, Ill.) scored 16 points including 10 in the second half as the second-seeded Holy Cross women's basketball team downed seventh-seeded Navy, 67-53, during the 2008 Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals today at Christl Arena. Holy Cross jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first nine minutes but Navy went on a 7-0 run led by Angela Myers with five points. Holding the Crusaders scoreless for over five minutes, Navy got back into the game, tying the game 17-17.

Amanda Brown hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to give the fifth-seeded Bucknell women's basketball team a 50-47 victory over fourth-seeded Army in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals Saturday at Christl Arena. Brown tallied a game-high 19 points, including 13 in the second half and overtime, as the Bison advanced to the semifinals for the fifth time in seven years.

After dropping two games to Lafayette during the regular season, Lehigh got its chance to avenge those loses, and it made the most of it, coming away with a 62-51 win over the Leopards in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y. Erica Prosser and Alex Ross each scored a game high 16 points for the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 18-12 on the year.

Army Wins AHA Regular Season Championship

A new banner will be hanging at Tate Rink. Army made sure that there would be no co-champions with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart, Saturday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest in front of more than 2,500 fans at Tate Rink. Army needed at least a point to win its first-ever conference crown outright and scored twice in the third period to ensure there would be no co-champions.

Army Senior Will Participate In Frozen Four Challenge

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army hockey player Luke Flicek (Burnsville, Minn) is among the 12 male skaters chosen to participate in the third annual Frozen Four Skills Challenge that will be held April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, the NCAA announced on Thursday.

Flicek is one of six skaters on the East team and the second Army player chosen to participate. Goalie Brad Roberts competed in the initial challenge. Flicek is the lone players representing the Atlantic Hockey Association.

The Skills Challenge will be conducted in an East versus format with each team having six male position players, six female positions players, two male goaltenders and two female goaltenders. A list of alternates has been established in the event players are participating in the Frozen Four or have to withdrawal.

To be eligible, all players must have exhausted their collegiate eligibility and be nominated by their head coach. The players were selected by representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association, the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and NCAA national office staff.

The competitions will include puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot. Each competitor will receive a complete set of equipment and a full uniform from Nike Bauer Hockey.

"The Frozen Four Skills Challenge has really taken off as an event," said Joel Maturi, chair of the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and director of athletics at the University of Minnesota. "Each year the caliber of the student-athletes in this competition has gotten stronger and stronger, and we feel this year is no different. The Skills Challenge will once again be a showcase of the nation's best senior student-athletes."

Flicek will be joined on the East squad by goaltenders Kevin Regan of New Hampshire and David Leggio from Clarkson. The other skaters are Michael Brennan, Boston College; Pete MacArthur, Boston University; Jesse Winchester, Colgate; Jon Rheault, Providence and Jake Morissette, RPI.

The female skaters on the East squad include Hayley Moore, Brown; Jaclyn Hawkins, Connecticut; Martine Garland, New Hampshire; Jennifer Hitchcock, New Hampshire; Marykate Oakley, Princeton and Sabrina Harbec, St. Lawrence. The goalies will be Sarah Perry, Sacred Heart and Meghan Guckian, St. Lawrence.

The West team is led by the nation's leading point scorer, Michigan's Kevin Porter, who has 51 points on 25 goals and 26 assists. The rest of the skaters include Jimmy Kilpatrick, Colorado College; Andrew Thomas, Denver; Bryan Lerg, Michigan State; Tommy Goebel, Ohio State and Mike Forgie, Wayne State (Mich.). The West goaltenders will be St. Norbert's Kyle Jones, who leads Division III with a goals against average of 1.18, and Denver's Peter Mannino, who was the 2006 Men's Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player.

The women's portion of the West roster includes Ohio State's Tessa Bonhomme, who is in the top 10 in the nation in assists with 27. Also on the team is Courtney DeHoey, Lake Forest; Karine Demeule, Minnesota Duluth; Bobbi Ross, Minnesota; Shannon Moulson, Niagara and Laura Fast, St. Cloud St. The two female goaltenders will be Laura Hosier, Mercyhurst and Britni Kehler, Minnesota State,Mankato.

Tickets for the event are $10 and will go on sale March 1 at the Pepsi Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 303/830-8497. The Frozen Four Skills Challenge will begin at 7 p.m. Mountain time and will be preceded by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 5:30 p.m. and the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:05 p.m. The Frozen Four Skills Challenge and the Hobey Baker Award will both be shown live on ESPNU.

Flicek is also a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award, along with teammates Bryce Hollweg and Owen Meyer.

Flicek has been among the nation's leaders in assists all season and leads the Black Knights in assists and points. A senior alternate captain from Burnsville, Minn., Flicek has 11 goals, 21 assists and 32 points and helped Army to the top of the conference standings and home ice in next week's playoffs.

Army is 15-13-4 overall and leads the Atlantic Hockey Association with 33 points off of a 15-8-3 record. Army will conclude its regular season this weekend with a home and home series with Sacred Heart. Army will play at Milford, Conn., Friday and host Senior Day Saturday at Tate Rink. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.

Black Knights Score Comeback Win Over Lafayette

Navy Salvages Season Split With Star Game Victory

Navy scored 53 points, including 30 from outside the three-point line, in the second half to overcome a nine-point deficit and defeat Army, 71-63, in front of a season-high 3,605 fans at Christl Arena on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The Black Knights are now 11-15 overall and 4-8 in league play. The Midshipmen improved to 15-12 and 8-4 in conference play. Navy’s victory split the season series for the fifth consecutive year, and marked the Mids sixth straight win in the Star Game.

Men's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep

Army Skates To 1-1 Tie With Holy Cross

Robb Ross scored early in the third period but neither team was able to net a goal the rest of the way as Army and Holy Cross skated to a 1-1 tie, Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey Association action at a sold out Tate Rink. A capacity crowd of 2,674 was on hand as Army extended its unbeaten streak to seven games by skating to its third tie of the season.

Brown's Buzzer Beater Lifts Black Knights To OT Win

Jarell Brown's jumper as time expired in overtime lifted the Army men's basketball team to a 59-57 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena. The victory snapped the Black Knights' seven-game losing streak to the Raiders and evened Army's record to 11-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Kassel Extends Shutout Streak, Army Wins

Josh Kassel posted his second straight shutout and Bryce Hollweg and Jeff Fearing scored goals as Army moved into a tie for first-place in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings with a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross, Friday night at Tate Rink. Army won its sixth straight game and improved to 12-12-3 overall and 12-7-2 in league place and moved into a tie atop the standings with RIT, which was idle.

More Honors For Army Goalie Josh Kassel

Army goalie Josh Kassel has been named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the Atlantic Hockey Association Goalie of the Week for his performance in a pair of wins against Connecticut. Last week, Kassel was the co-Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the AHA Goalie of the Week after allowing two goals in identical 2-1 wins against Air Force.

The Huskies fall to 8-15-4 overall and 7-10-3 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Black Knights improve to 11-12-3 and 11-7-2.

Stifling Defense, Three Goals Carries Army Hockey

Bryce Hollweg and Luke Flicek each had a goal and assist and a stifling defense held Connecticut to just 16 shots on goal as Army beat the Huskies, 3-1, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association matchup at Tate Rink. PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Senior forward Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye, NY/Rye) scored a game-high 26 points leading the Pace University men's basketball team to an 82-67 victory over the Skyhawks of Stonehill College this afternoon in a key Northeast-10 Conference game at the Goldstein Center. The Setters improve their overall record to an even 9-9, 8-5 in NE-10 play, while the Skyhawks fall to 13-8 on the season, 9-5 in conference play.

Pace's Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) inched closer to Pace's all-time three-point mark, connecting on her record tying 214th trifecta of her career in the Setters' 67-43 loss to the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Setters drop to 5-13 overall and 4-9 in the NE-10 while the Skyhawks improve to 15-4 and 11-3 in conference play.
